Processing ceramic rods and ceramic in CNC machining

by Natalie Rager

In order to come up with an accurately cut shape during ceramic cutting, you’d have to cut on the lathe with a large tool. This has to be done the same way through all machining services. Want to find out how to process ceramic and ceramic rods? Then, stick to this article!

How to Process Ceramic in CNC Machining

Ceramics are generally prone to edge collapse while they’re being processed. They’re also very brittle, which means that the process will be extra difficult and should be done with an extra level of care.

There are two machines used during the process. The first one is the grinding machine, which is used to grind the ceramics into wafers. The second one is the CNC, which is where the processing starts properly. This is basically the process but for some tips to help you carry out the process better, look below.

  1. Always leave an allowance in the workspace while you’re creating it before you carry out the CNC process. Naturally, you should see an edge collapse behind the workplace but it shouldn’t be an issue since you’ve left some allowance. Just quickly grind the reserved amount.
  1. Make a hole with a small diameter tool and then expand it up to the preferred size. This will create some lines inside the hole.
  1. Punch every side of the workplace, turn it upside down and punch the same sides as the other surface. When you succeed in punching the same spot, you’ve created a hole. This method can be difficult to pull through as there’s no guarantee that you’ll hit the same spot on the other surface.
  1. Use a smaller diameter tool while machining and grind layer by layer after spiral cutting. This method is a bit slow as the tool has to go down as slowly as possible. However, it offers an advantage as the hole comes out as cleanly and smooth as it can be.

How to Process Ceramic Rod in CNC Machining

Ceramic rods are usually processed with alumina ceramic raw materials and zirconia. Whichever one you decide to use depends totally on the result you’re expecting. However, both products are different and offer their relative importance.

As for alumina ceramic raw materials, they’re more conductive, mechanically strong, and resistant to excessive temperature. It also has a relatively low density, which makes it superb for long-distance transportation.

The zirconia ceramic rod on the other hand has a density of around 6.0, compressive strength, wear resistance, and high hardness. You will very likely find the zirconia ceramic rod in motor shafts, needle gauge, grinding and all the other related components because of its toughness.

Although the alumina ceramic is also tough, it has a dry kind of toughness that can easily break if not handled carefully.

Conclusion

Processing ceramic and the ceramic rod would depend on you and the style you want to go for. Whichever one you choose, note that there’s a strict guideline to it. Follow it bone to bone and you’ll come out with the desired product.
