How To Choose the Right Punched and Dies?

by Natalie Rager

We usually deem press brake tools as insignificant accessories. But the fact is that only the tooling comes in contact while bending.

The tooling is divided into two parts; punches and dies. Punches are installed on the top of the ram. A few examples are ACCURL Best Selling Cnc Hydraulic punch, large gooseneck upper punch for press brake, etc.

In contrast, the dies are installed on the base of the workbench. Examples include gooseneck press brake dies, CNC press brake dies, and Hydraulic CNC Ridgid Bending Machine Mould punches.

These two work simultaneously to complete the bending of the workpiece. To achieve efficient bending, the toolings need to meet some requirements. Various toolings are used to make parts of the same grade. The reason to choose incorrect tooling is the scarcity of access to the right ones.

Let’s understand the requirements to choose the perfect punches and dies.

What Requirements Should the Press Brake Tooling Meet?

1. Precision

The press brake must have high accuracy, which is imparted by high precision. High precision makes it possible for the toolings to reduce adjustments while setting it up.

The tools should have endurance within a specific level, i.e., 0.0004 inches.

2. Sizes

Most press brake tools are manufactured as per metrical prototypes. The nominal size is 0.25″ and a V opening of 6mm (0.236″).

Toolings of standard size are a convenient option, especially when there is a need to replace them. The design of tooling parts has typical proportions that remain invariant. This eliminates the need to make frequent adjustments during replacements. Bends in the sheet metal have oval radii.

4. Sections

Segmented sections enable the construction of tools of various lengths from several already segmented pieces. It allows you to build the length of your choice according to your requirements.

Small pieces are preferred as they are secure and more manageable.

5. Bending material

The type of metal that needs to be bent is a critical factor. The bending radius and angle depend on the thickness of the metal.

If the thickness of the metal plate is more than the internal radius, the plate will be extended and eventually disfigured. While this deformation will be avoided by having a radius greater than the thickness

5. Clamping system

Financing in a new clamping machine and the matching tool will be the best choice you have ever made. The American-style toolings have a smaller surface area for clamping. On the other hand, European-style toolings have a larger size. The large surface area makes it more protected.

Auto-clamping systems are gaining popularity due to fast tool changeovers and authentic tool seating. Remember that loading and self-seating punches are best due to the provision of accuracy and ease.

Conclusion

The press brake toolings of the press brake are an essential part that affects their quality and shape. That is why it is vital to look for suitable tooling for the material per the metal sheet.

Determination of shape, angle, and die’s opening size is also fundamental characteristics to consider.

A survey through the market and then buying the correct tools improves accuracy and affects the bending angle of the work piece. The proper selection is also cost-effective and ideal for the safety of press brake operators.
