What do Tiffán, Hilltop, Tűzkő and Chateau Kajmád have in common?
A stock clearance of a well known retailer provided my with a good opportunity to acquire some bottles for party people coming to visit us from time to time, you know smokers and alike. Some of these wines were so disappointing they drove me to the conclusion I made about mediocre wine reviews in this post. Tiffány’s Portugieser 2009, Tiffán’s Imortal cuvée 2007 and Tűzkő’s Sauvignon Blanc 2008 were good match with cigarettes only really. The following two wines were the best of the lot, so far.
The wines
Chateau Kajmád – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Kékfrankos, 2003
Considering it was made in 2003 we can call this an early bird of it’s kind with it’s 14% alcohol.
The look: A dark core surrounded by pigeon blood hue and a pale brownish rim, with some purplish reflections.
Nose: Interesting spices coming through a stuffy bouquet at first, things like turmeric-favored plum and other oddities.
Palate: Dirty. After 90 minutes it evoles structurally but I’d like more definition to it. The wine’s texture is oily and I’m suspecting a good deal of glycerin here. The tart fruityness I would even call pleasant would it not been ruined by the whole picture including quite a lot of half powdery, half sticky overflowing tannins soaked up by the glycerin. The wine has a dirty character which I associate with many – even not so old – Ch. Kajmád wines, very much the opposite of the clean Konyári or Gróf Buttler wines.
Hilltop – Prémium Merlot 2008
Look: dead ruby.
Nose: mulberry syrup, very fruity.
Palate: Ligh-bodied wine with blueberry wrapped in burnt rubber and licorice aromas. Soft texture and polished tannins. But as a whole it’s too “made” and simple.
Evaluation: forget about it.
Bargain hunting: second chance
Eurobor’s Tűzkő line deserves a last chance and I have a Chardonnay 2007 anyway, so I didn’t hesitate to give it to them.
This Chardonnay has a deep brassy color with grape juice aromas on the nose with a tutti-frutti accent, relatively dense. It’s a bit tired on the palate, medium-bodied, not fresh, woody (but not in an oaky-vanilla way), with a wet hay character and later with grapefruit. Some unripe vegetables come through the slightly bitter mid-palate supported by harsh acidity.
According to the winery’s website this wine ages well but if you ask me, this wine’s already over its peak.
Score: 3+
Price: HUF 1 300

A Chronologic Journey Back to 2008 or the Hungarian Wine Grand Total
What a modest title. I came up with it in only 1 minute of thinking. In my defense: it’s search-engine friendly and it’s true, from my perspective. Anyway, here’s the almost complete list of tasted wines and their score from 2008.
One remark, except the festival notes, all reviews were written based on at least 1/2 bottle of wine tasted by me alone over several hours, at least once over this period. Even wines presented in quick notes. Any occasional exception was mentioned in the given post, but they were maximum 2 or 3, if any.

6, 6+ |
Not being a Hárslevelű fan myself, this was my first surprise this day. More really good Hárslevelű were to follow. This one has deep corn color, has honey and burnt sugar smell besides tropical fruits. The acids can almost balance the intense smell/taste, but only just – not. A little carbon dioxide makes it refreshing though. And it has vanilla in taste too. A really lovely wine for both beginners and maybe even for snobbish drinkers. I like it. |

80% Furmint, 20% Hárslevelű. Excellent combination, resulting in a very intense, fresh smell rather Hárslevelű-type. The 13,5% alcohol is supported by nice acid. Cinnamon, or rather apple pie in smellGrass and vegetables are also present, but not the usual ones! My wife said Dorombor was lemonade with lime. I am looking forward to find out how long the integrity of Furmint and Hárselvelű will last. |

Orsolya has been one of my favorite emerging wineries. The smell of their wines are almost unbeatable. This Pinot is a bit of exception, nice light Pinot smell but less intense than you would expect from Orsolya and Zoltán. It’s still a good wine, but not exceptionnel. I am told that Orsolya Pincészet’s stocks are empty, so we have to wait ‘til next year for a fresh refill. |

Renana 2007 – quick note
Eurobor is marketing its Tűzkő Riesling (Rajnai Rizling) under the brand of Renana (which also means Riesling).
The nose is full of grassy, spicy, floral notes with a good deal of a bit disturbing wet hay. On the palate lot of residual sugar and with virtually no acidity it’s really over the top. The palate also carries elements of fermented white fruits and a vinious undertone. In a few hours the wine blowns to bits.
Score: 3+
Price: HUF 1212
Tűzkő – Sauvignon Blanc, 2007 quick note
Another Sauvignon Blanc, another Eurobor. This time I took one from the lower segment of the sortiment.
Bright golden color. It has a fresh grassy nose with a lavender undertone. The palate shows fresh, long, rustic acidity and an even longer bitterness. All very young and quite not integrated. This characteristic is accompanied by the scents and savor of lemon grass, mint and peppermint. The mediterranean spices (including thyme) are more present than any fruit.
Score: 4, 4-
Price: HUF 1338/ EUR 5
Eurobor – Tűzkő Domb Cuvée, 2005
Dark ruby color with brick rim.
The berry fruit bouquet quickly disappears behind spices like white pepper, and a chalky accent.
On the palate woody, sour tannic texture. The bitterness is over the top to my taste. It’s like the winemaker was trying to battle the difficulties of the vintage with a lot of oak.
45 minutes of decanting opens it a little and brings some chocolate and leather elements to the nose.
I could appreciate the almost full body and the wine’s medium complexity but the incisive tannins wouldn’t let flavours really come through. The long, sour finish makes it very difficult indeed. 2 hours decanting and a very ripe cherry note makes it a bit more interesting.
This cuvée, maybe in a better vintage with some adjustments could be much much better. I’m looking forward to the 2006 but as of now, the 2005 is overpriced.
Score: 5 points
Price: appr. EUR 17
Eurobor Tűzkő Szelekció 2006
I’ve been making some online research to find out about Eurobor Kft. but I gave up. Found nothing.
The review
Bright gold color.
The bouquet is rich with ripe continental fruits, apricot and apple with cinnamon. Later vegetable undertones like freshly cut green flower dressings.
On the palate oily texture and it’s a little bit tannic too. Long finish with both grapes’ character. Oak and lee contact characteristics are also present. Long, but not harsh sparkling acidity.
A decent, medium-bodied wine. Quite recognisable, since its not a common cuvée (Chardonnay and Pinot Gris).
A day after on the palate vinious notes with woody underpinning (brought by the Chardonnay) with vanilla and Cognac elements. Feels like a late harvest wine.
Score: 5+/6-
Price: HUF 2 652/ EUR 11. Fairly priced.
