Mad cow

I always liked this couple’s wines from Ostoros . To me, Orsolya wines are very fresh, acidic and fruity, mainly.orsolyatehentanc06

Well, this one’s called Tehéntánc (from 2006) which means “cow’s dance” and it is a blend of Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc and Merlot so many people refer to this wine as the Bikavér of Orsolya Pince. Although it qualifies as a Bikavér, it’s different from what many people expect from an Egri Bikavér in many ways.

Medium-deep ruby color and as many Orsolya red wines, this one also has a lively move.

This cuvée has a fresh character on the nose and on the palate too. First the nose, with fruitiness of berry fruits and spices, with a mineral undertone and a smoky element. There are clear Kékfrankos and Cabernet Franc notes. Later an earl Grey tea note too.

Fresh and young, this wine’s palate has fresh, almost crispy acidity in sync with the unripe cherry and sour cherry aromas and a long, tart finish. This is a small-medium bodied wine, lean and firm, developing a pepper element on the palate with time. After about two hours the wine gets a better structure and a more friendly overall character with more ripe fruits and a better balance.

Score: 4+/5

Hi,

I think you tasted the Tehéntánc from 2006. Orsolya winery is one of my favourites from Hungary. Their wines are unique and I really like that style. I’ve been tasting Orsolya wines for 5 years and the older ones (Olaszrizling 2003, Százrejtekű 2002)are still marvellous. Have you ever tasted the Kadarka from 2007? In my opinion it is simply the best Kadarka from Hungary and also the best wine from the winery now.

Hi Norbi,

Correct, it was the 2006 as seen on the picture. Thanks for calling my attention to it.

No, I haven’t tasted the Kadarka 2007 yet but sounds very interesting. Why don’t you tell us how it’s like!

Hi,

Well Kadarka 2007 is a really fantastic wine. Its colour is definitely red like a classical pinot noir. It’s fresh and intense on the nose as well as on the palate. On the nose it has a special spicy character mainly with hip, raspberry and minerals. On the palate again hip and raspberry with a lot of spices and minerals. The wine’s well-balanced: a small-bodied one with low alcohol content, nice tannins and acids. Long finish. If you have a bottle of it, definitely taste it the next day. It will be even better.

I think I’ll visit Orsolya Pince one of these weekends of this lovely spring.

Meanwhile I recommend you the Gróf Buttler Kadarka 2006 which is simply fantastic. I’ll write about it, maybe already this evening.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll try it soon. The Buttler Kadarka 2005 was also fantastic.

As far as I know they don’t have any more Kadarka 2007 in the cellar, but maybe the Maligán has some. If you cannot find and are interested in tasting it I can give you a bottle of it.

Thanks for offering this Norbi! Maligán actually ran out of stock so your offer is much appreciated.
