Halmosi – Szekszárdi Kékfrankos, 2007

Next in the row in the hunting for good red wines under HUF2000 series this Kékfrankos was recommended by a merchant who’s very proud of his discoveries of unknown or smaller wineries (as a matter of fact Levendula Pince’s Cabernet Sauvignon is a best seller in his store ever since I introduced it to him but I wasn’t so lucky with his recommendations so far). I was a bit disappointed by a bottle of Losonci Kékfrankos the guy once recommended to me and other minor disappointments followed.

This Halmosi Kékfrankos has a good-looking bottle (I keep forgetting taking pictures lately). The nose suggests very ripe material, aged in large used barrel ( but that’s my guess only). The reality’s different. Clear nectarine aroma on the palate but the wine is too acidic which doesn’t suite this rather thin wine. Relatively long tannic-bitter finish.

Score: 3+/4-

Price: HUF 2 100

Three things:

First: If I remember well it was not me, who discovered Halmosi Pince. Have a look at http://www.kezmuvesborok.hu!

Second: Losonci Kékfrankos was a present and at that time filled up directly from the barrel without even a label. If I remember right I just put it in your hand with the words: Just try it instead of me…

Third: Bad news for you, the whole Levendula CS is from now on only available at:

ME.

So you do read this blog sometimes! That’s great, you couldn’t find a better source of independent opinion in English (as a matter of fact, you can hardly find any other source in English).

To your second point: I didn’t say so. I don’t think any of us has ever actually discovered any winery (since they’re desperate to be discovered, such coincidence is very unlikely), but you certainly have a merit in spreading the word in the south-Pest area.

About your third point: it’s as bad news for the whole community as it is for me. I don’t feel particularily affected by it. From your commercial perspective: congratulations for the deal!

Any suggestion this time?

By the way: my second point was Losonci.

My suggestion this time:

Think about you independence, because that sounds not so independent anymore:

[...]One note: the said retailer has a cool shop near Lánchíd where not even the clerks can ruin the experience. It’s unbelievable we had to wait 20 years to have this in Budapest.

Let’s then make a disclosure here: I never accepted, moreover I’ve never been tempted to accept anything from the said retailer (except the discount any consumer gets), I don’t even think they suspect I exist. So my opinion remains independent.

Please don’t take it personal: your shop has a very different, charming atmosphere, just not in a way I’d been looking for. But still, it’s a lovely space and with your dedication it must remain a stronhold of fine wines in that area, I wish all the best for you. It’s a lovely place and I hope it’ll remain so.

What I was saying is that that particular shop has a trendy atmoshpere mixing traditional Budapest architecture with modern interior design in a sophisticated way, adding a decent selection of Hungarian wines. It’s not a family space, like yours, that’s all.

Should you consider any remarkable action deserving attention in my judgement, I’d be glad to refer to it one of my posts.

Any suggestion?
