Egri Glycerin 2009 by Vincze

I don’t know the legal term for what the press decribes as “the cellar of the winemaker of the year is closed by the wine qualification (classification?) authorities”. The bottomline is that added gylcerin in test samples was found in Vincze wines recently and irregularities in storing the said wines (well, a few hectos, the whole lot actually, were simply missing…) during the investigation of the case.

Falsification of wines in Hungary is not uncommon, rumour has it. Ráspi once explained to me (and a zillion times to the rest of the world I guess) that techniques like that, and even legal methods of alterating artifiially the character of the wine is widespread practice even among the best winemakers in Hungary (he didn’t think twice to name a few of the best known winemakers of the country). This might be exaggeration, but let’s not pretend that Vincze’s case is unique. I doubt anyone thought this. What raises concern in my mind is how could this guy have gotten elected winemaker of the year? According to which criteria? And, let’s think a minute about who voted him this award…

You can read my opinion about Vincze’s wines here.

Dear Admin.,

This is rather worrying news and I am grateful to you for drawing it to our attention. Not good for an industry trying to make a name for itself.

I do agree that his wines are over-rated and never quite understood the regard in which he is held. As you rightly imply, this incident really does raise a number of questions.

PS. You owe me a reply on another matter, if you recall! :-) )

You mean the anonimity?

First of all my name doesn’t matter, I’m not from the wine industry and I don’t hold a degree in viticulture either.

On the other hand I could be anyone, I could pick a “funny” nick name like most bloggers do but would that help? I mean, you could be anyone, using the John V. as a nickname, right?

And last but not least, I don’t want my friends or anyone else know me as someone who takes wine drinking a little bit too seriously (which I do, and that’s quite freakish, which is not cool). Blogging is not cool. Wine blogging even less. Wine bloggers are somewhat pathetic, you see.

Fair enough, admin. – just find it funny and cold to call somebody “admin.” – especially someone who is providing a service I enjoy, with or without qualifications in the industry.

I reckon your Christian name must be either Gordon or Viktor. As I’m a persistent, I’ll try to work out which one…….. :-) ))

(PS. My name is not made up as you’ll see from the email address (also not made up!) – which only you can see.)

I thought we already agreed that I’m no longer admin but “the whine guy” :) But you can also call me Corinthiano, as Corinthians fans are called in Brazil. Anyway, you surely remember when Brian explains to the Christians (in the movie “Life of Brian”) that they’re all individuals – well, I’m the one who disagreed then :)

Both guysd you’re referring to are godlike masters of the universe and I’m jut a tiny mortal part-time alcoholic. A liberal-marxist one btw.

Dear Corinthiano :-)
Do you plan to write more about this? All I found on the web is in Hungarian, and I find my knowledge of this language slightly lacking :-( . Automated translations do not help much, so if you could give some more informations, legions of English speaking lovers of Hungarian wines would be grateful, including this humble one.

Greetings from Poland!

Hi Andrzej,

It’s great to see you around!

To answer your question: I’m not an authentic source concerning this subject and I wasn’t following the case closely enough but I’ll try to gather the most important pieces of information for you by Friday.

Cheers,

Corinthiano
